Biography
Margaux Valengin’s paintings consider corporeality as both artifice and animality, staging richly ambiguous fables of bodily aggression, protection, and vulnerability, often between paired beings. The bodies that populate her works evoke dark, inward-looking, explicitly psychic moods, and frequently confront the viewer through a direct address imbued with a kind of iconic authority. Whether human, horse, dog, or cat, these taut, articulated, fragmentary figures silently project defiance, protection, sinuous arousal, nocturnal menace, or melancholy.
Margaux Valengin (born 1992, France) holds a BFA from ENSAV La Cambre (Belgium) and an MFA from the Royal College of Art (UK). In 2022, she was a recipient of the Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program. She has presented solo exhibitions at Galerie PACT (Paris, France), Spring Break Art Show, curated by Julie Curtiss (New York, USA), Union Gallery (London, UK), and Y2K Group (New York, USA). Her work has also been included in group exhibitions at Asia Art Center (Beijing, China), Future Gallery (Berlin, Germany), Galerie PACT (Paris, France), Y2K Group (New York, USA), Union Gallery (London, UK), and SIGNAL (New York, USA).
Les peintures de Margaux Valengin interrogent la corporéité à la fois comme artifice et comme animalité, mettant en scène des fables richement ambiguës d’agression, de protection et de vulnérabilité corporelles, souvent entre des êtres appariés. Les corps qui peuplent ses œuvres convoquent des atmosphères sombres, intériorisées, explicitement psychiques, et font fréquemment face au spectateur dans une adresse directe, dotée d’une forme d’autorité iconique. Qu’ils soient humains, chevaux, chiens ou chats, ces figures tendues, articulées, fragmentaires projettent silencieusement la défiance, la protection, une excitation sinueuse, une menace nocturne ou une mélancolie diffuse.
